Exposure to heavy metals is an increasing consideration in our modern environment. While high-level exposure can cause acute toxicity, ongoing lower-level exposure may also place additional burden on the body and can be relevant when investigating overall health and wellbeing. Heavy metals can interfere with normal biological processes and contribute to oxidative stress through the production of free radicals. Depending on the metal, level and duration of exposure, they may also interact with essential minerals and affect cellular and enzyme function. How the Ionic Heavy Metal Test Works The Ionic Heavy Metal Test uses diphenylthiocarbazone (Dithizone), a highly sensitive chemical reagent that reacts with a range of metallic ions to produce characteristic colour changes. Dithizone has a long history of use in analytical chemistry for detecting metals and has been used in methods for analysing biological samples including urine and blood. In clinic, we use a urine sample to provide a snapshot of ionic metals being excreted by the body. Colour changes within the sample can indicate the presence of metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, aluminium or copper, allowing us to identify areas that may warrant further investigation or targeted support. I include this assessment as part of your Initial Testing Appointment and repeat it later where appropriate, allowing us to compare your results and monitor changes over the course of your treatment program. As with all of the testing I use, your heavy metal results are not considered in isolation. They are interpreted alongside your symptoms, health history, nutritional status and other clinical findings to help build a more complete picture of your health.
